General tab

Compatibility should be set to Acrobat 3.0. The other options should be unchecked because they are irrelevant to our use of Acrobat. Resolution should be set to a minimum of 1200 dpi, but this setting has no effect on the actual resolution of the images in the PDF or on the ultimate output resolution, and it does not affect the size of the PDF file.
The default page size setting is not relevant if you are creating PDF files by printing to the AdobePS printer. If you are distilling an EPS file, you must set the default page size to match the size of the EPS image.

Compression tab

For both "Color images" and "Grayscale images", UNcheck the downsampling option and make sure that "Compression" is checked. Select the JPEG compression option and set the quality to "Maximum". This setting provides minimally destructive compression that can reduce file size by as much as 80%.
For "Monochrome images", uncheck the downsampling option and make sure that "Compression" is checked. The default compression of CCITT Group 4 should be selected.
"Compress text and line art" should already be checked, and it should remain checked.

Fonts tab

"Embed all fonts" and "Subset fonts below" should both be checked, and the percentage should be set to 100%. If you are using the AdobePS printer for creating PDFs, you should not need to do anything else on this screen.

Color tab

Color management is best turned off in the context we are discussing here. Select "None" for the settings file, and choose "Leave color unchanged" for color management policy. This will disable the "Working spaces" options. Under "Device-dependent data", uncheck everything and select "Remove" in the Transfer functions box.

Advanced tab

In the "Options" section, uncheck everything except "Preserve Level 2 copypage semantics". In the "DSC" section, check "Process DSC comments" and uncheck everything below it except "Preserve EPS information" and "Preserve document information".
