2009 contests will be (mostly) paperless

After a meeting of the ONPA Contest Committee on May 21, 2008, we can now confirm that our 2009 newspaper contests WILL be entered electronically in most categories (see below for exceptions). Instead of locating, tearing out, sorting, stapling, packaging, labeling, and shipping scores of printed pages, entrants will upload PDF files as part of the online registration process.
This will be a new experience for us, our members, and those who judge the contests. We will do our best to anticipate and fend off any potential sources of confusion or misery. If you anticipate any such situations, please let us know immediately so we can work on solutions.
In certain categories, submitting entries in PDF format is not practical. In categories whose entries are complete sections or issues, PDF files would be too large to upload. For categories in which judging is partly based on reproduction quality, a PDF file would not suffice. And a few categories are judged at the associated conventions, which requires entries that are viewable without an internet connection.
Below are the category lists for the three non-collegiate 2009 contests. Categories in boldface will NOT be entered electronically, but rather will be entered as printed pages, sections, or issues. In all other categories, we will be asking entrants to create PDF files containing only the pages that are part of the entry and to upload those files from within the online registration facility.
Please contact Laurie Hieb (laurie@orenews.com), Julie Schmidt (julie@orenews.com), or David Merrill (dmerrill@orenews.com) at ONPA if you have questions, concerns, or comments about this process.
